Meret Oppenheim (1913–1985) is undoubtedly the most unconventional, innovative artist Switzerland ever produced. The photographs Man Ray took of her and her world-renowned Fur Cup established her name in international art circles and beyond. Yet numerous facets of her prophetic work have remained unknown to this day—including her fountain projects, which she designed on paper and produced as models from the late sixties to the mid-eighties. None of these were commissioned, and so her designs are all the more free and idiosyncratic. Three of these ideas have actually been realized: the Meret Oppenheim Fountain in Bern , the Spiral (Nature’s Course) in Paris , and the Hermes Fountain in Daniel Spoerri’s garden in Seggiano , Italy . Fountain Stories unites all of Oppenheim’s fountain projects, including her unrealized models, in a single publication.
